United States Coast Guard Auxiliary semper paratus

Long Island is best known for its beaches and waterways. With tens of thousands of boats and boaters and fisherman enjoying the local waterways safety is all important.

Established in 1939 by an act of congress,  the CG Auxiliary is the civilian arm of the United States Coast Guard. The Islip Flotilla (1-3) consists of about 40 volunteers who function in areas of boater education, vessel safety checks, Marine Domain Awareness, Routine Safety, and  aids to navigation (bouy checking)and on water patrols. From simply helping a local boater who may have run out of gas to maintaining vigilance against terrorism the 33,000 nationwide volunteers of the USCG Auxiliary last year donated over 4 million man hours to aid boaters, fisherman, and help maintain national security.

I joined the local Islip flotilla of the Auxiliary 16 years ago and have served in various positions including Flotilla commander for 2010 and 2011 and Division One Vice commander in 2012.

One thing stands out in my years with the CG Auxiliary is that there are still many people operating boats who need fundemental boating education. All  boat operators should take a Boating Safety Course offered by the Auxiliary. The Coast Guard calls them                         "Preventative Search and Rescues"

Classes are offered localy but are seasonal and subject to limited seating.

I've come across many of our customers who did not realize my involvement with the Auxiliary . Most of those folks have now taken the Boating Education courses and have their boats safety checked annualy.

  Laura and her daughter Cindy are deeply  involved in this organization.

Supporting US military troops from Suffolk County.  Purchasing supplies equipment and care packages for our deployed service members. Volunteering time at military sponsored events and also recognizing of those who have been injured or lost thier lives in combat. 

 June 2009; SCHF aquired six desperately needed megaphones (Donated by Daytona Industries of Wantagh, NY.) Shipped to the 455 Expeditiaonary Security Force Squadron, Bagram Air Field, Afganistan. 

 December 2011;  Suffolk County Homfront aided the 106th rescue wing of the Air National Guard of Westhampton Beach with many volunteered hours and crafts for the holiday season.

 July 2011: Through donated funds SCHF covered the security deposit and associated fees for a resident veteran seeking housing. Addittionaly, we provided him with some essential furnishings.
